Inspired Poetry

Students analyze poetry inspired by Castle in the Clouds before creating their own poetry.

Guiding Question(s):

  • Why might an artist choose poetry as a means to convey their thoughts and ideas to an audience?
  • How can language choice, including figures of speech, enhance a poet’s message?

Standard(s):
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

  • 4.9-12: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including words with multiple meanings or language that is particularly fresh, engaging, or beautiful.
  • 5.9-12: Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure specific parts of a text
  • 4.9-12: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • 5.9-12: Demonstrate the understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. A) interpret figures of speech (e.g., hyperbole, paradox) in context and analyze their role in the text.

  • The area’s unique geological history has contributed to the property’s beautiful landscape and views that have inspired so many.
  • The land now known as Castle in the Clouds provided plentiful resources to those who used it before becoming Lucknow Estate.
