Things To Do
Whether you’re looking for a day’s worth of fun activities or leisurely tour through the Lucknow mansion, you’ll find it here at Castle in the Clouds. Check out our Program Calendar to see what’s happening during your visit.
Start your journey to the historic Lucknow mansion as you travel via trolley on the same road that Thomas & Olive Plant traveled back in the early 1900s. Upon arrival to the mansion, a guide will provide you with a 10-15 minute orientation. Learn about the rags to riches to rags story of Thomas Plant as well as the history of the Arts & Craft style building.
After the orientation visitors are welcome to tour the mansion at their leisure on a self-guided tour. Pick up a floor plan in the main hall, and learn more about important features such as central vacuuming systems and needle showers. Special activities are available to children as an educational and exciting way to explore the mansion. See everything vintage from the clothes in Olive Plant’s closets to the innovative electrical fixtures. Step out the back door to the lawn and stroll through the gardens.
The Exhibit Gallery
Located in The Carriage House, our Exhibit Gallery is now home to a brand NEW exhibit, featuring restoration stories and information. “Lucknow Revealed: Research, Restoration & Mystery at Castle in the Clouds” invites guests to learn how the Castle in the Clouds restoration team is peeling back the layers of the past to reveal the secrets of the Castle’s design and construction, and how this special place is being preserved for generations to come. The interactive exhibit features objects documenting architectural and interior design at the Castle, historic photographs of the building’s construction, restoration project highlights, and invites visitors to help solve some of the Castle’s research mysteries. The exhibit is FREE and is accessible without admission via the Ossipee Park Road entrance.

Visiting with Young Children
Castle in the Clouds is a fun place to spend the day with your entire family. Much of the property is open for our guests to discover at their leisure so feel free to take as much or as little time as you’d like exploring. If you’re visiting with small children, please keep in mind that car seats, strollers and metal framed baby carriers will not be permitted inside the mansion.
We have a few activities inside the mansion to help children learn about life in the 1920’s. In the kitchen, children of all ages can practice using tools of the time period. Children can also practice their hand at letter writing in our large guest room; some of Olive’s personal letters are displayed as encouragement. We also offer a Family Guide which allows families to learn more about the Lucknow estate together.
Shannon Pond is another big hit with families. Located on our exit road, it hosts NH largest Rainbow Trout. Children of ALL ages love to see the fish jump right out of the water to catch the food. We have fish feeders (that take quarters only) located on the dock at the pond. Please do not bring your own food to feed the trout as foreign foods can be harmful to their digestive systems.
Bring a picnic and spend the day with us! We have several picnic tables located throughout the property. The grove across from the Gift Shop hosts several picnic tables. Keep in mind that car traffic can be heavy in this area. There are several tables located in the Meadows by Shannon Pond, at Cones in the Clouds, and across the road from Shannon Pond. These locations are the best for families with young children as they are free to run around the meadows in a relatively safe area.
