Building an Estate

Using perimeter and area, students become architects and interior designers as they figure out how to arrange Lucknow’s octagonal dining room.

Guiding Question:

  • How can you use math to solve real-world problems?

Lesson Target(s):

  • I CAN measure objects using a ruler in centimeters.
  • I CAN design a floor plan given certain materials and parameters.
  • I CAN perform mathematical equations to determine the perimeter and/or area of different objects.

Standard(s):

  • MD 1. Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight.
  • G 2. Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientation or overall size.
  • OA 5. Add and subtract within 20.
  • MD 2. Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units.
  • G 1. Distinguish between defining attributes versus non-defining attributes.
  • MD 1. Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers.
  • OA 4. Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers.
  • OA 5. Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide.
  • MD 7. Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
  • MD 8. Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters.
  • MD 3. Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems.
  • G 3. Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.
  • G – Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
  • G 2. Draw geometric shapes with given conditions.
  • G-MG 3. Apply geometric methods to solve design problems.

Castle Theme(s):

  • Exploring life on the Lucknow Estate facilitates an intimate understanding of the Plants, their guests, and their servants.
  • Preservation has been an important value at Lucknow – from the Plant’s appreciation for the natural landscape, to current restoration efforts.
