Cardboard Box Sled Derby

Our Cardboard Box Sled Derby is CANCELLED DUE TO LACK OF SNOW AND UNSEASONABLY WARM TEMPERATURES. But don’t despair if you have already designed your sled, you can still enter the derby virtually. If you can find some snow, or even if it is on the grass, take a picture or video of your sled and email it to or along with your mailing address so the judges can award ribbons. The deadline for submissions is Saturday, March 11th. Judging will take place and winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 14th.

This event is brought to you by the partnership between Castle in the Clouds and the Moultonborough Recreation Department.

1:00pm at the Meadows at Shannon Pond
FREE to the public, donations welcome

Start planning now for one of our more fun and creative winter programs, and join us as we team up with the Moultonborough Recreation Department on Saturday March 4th for a Cardboard Box Sled Derby! Work with your families and friends to create your very own sled out of cardboard and try it out on the snow at Castle in the Clouds.

Cardboard Box Sleds and riders will be judged on creativity, design, and theme. Ribbons will be awarded in multiple categories that may include Most Creative, Most Colorful, Best Theme, Best Animal, Longest Run, Most Aerodynamic, and more!

After the derby, guests are invited to stay and continue the sledding fun. Warm up by the fire pit and enjoy hot cocoa and goodies, compliments of Castle in the Clouds and the Moultonborough Rec Department.

This free event is open to the public. Donations are appreciated to help us provide additional programs like this one in the future.

Rules for Building Your Sled

Sleds must consist of cardboard only. Materials like tape or paint may be used to help create the structure and decorate, but the structural integrity of the sled must be cardboard.

Sleds must be functional as a sled – ie: a person must ride the sled down the hill in order to participate.

For the safety of our riders, sleds may not be attached to one another. You can, however, build a sled large enough to fit more than one person!

No enhancers like wax, and no taping materials other than cardboard to your sled (no aluminum foil taped to the bottom of the sled to make it go faster, for example)

Rules for Participants

Anyone can participate – there is no age limit!

In order to practice safe sledding, riders are encouraged but not required to wear safety gear such as helmets and sturdy boots.

So we can get an estimate of how many visitors and sleds to expect, please let us know if you plan to attend. You can do so by emailing Stephanie at or Donna at or call us at Castle in the Clouds at 603-476-5900.

Please remember to use Ossipee Park Road (the main entrance will be closed.) You can park in our main parking lot and take a short walk to the meadows where the sledding will take place. This event will take place “snow or shine” – we will cancel if inclement weather prevents roads from being cleared. In the event of cancellation, we will post it on our website’s home page as well as on our Facebook page.

The event is put on in partnership with the Moultonborough Recreation Department
