DESCRIPTION:Northern New England is full of reminders of past lives: stone walls\, old foundations\, a century-old lilac struggling to survive as the forest reclaims a once-sunny dooryard. What forces shaped settlement\, and later abandonment\, of these places? Adair Mulligan explores the rich story to be discovered in what remains behind. See how one town has set out to create an inventory of its cellar holes\, piecing together the clues in the landscape. Such a project can help landowners know what to do if they have archaeological sites on their land and help stimulate interest in a town’s future through its past.  \nThis presentation will take place in the Winnipesaukee Room on the second floor of the Carriage House. Registration is encouraged but not required. Knowing how many people will be attending allows us to better prepare for the evening. \nThis presentation is made possible by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities: Humanities To Go program.

DESCRIPTION:Led by an experienced volunteer hiker\, this week’s hike is along Mt. Roberts Trail up to the top of Mt. Roberts. This moderate to difficult level hike is about 5 miles and has an elevation climb of approximately 1\,350′. This is a free program\, though registration is required. \nPlease wear appropriate footwear for hiking and dress for the weather. Bring sunscreen\, bug spray\, and snacks as desired.

SUMMARY:Guided Hike: Brook Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided hike of the most popular trail at Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area\, and learn about the history of the property and the nature you will encounter along the way! The Brook Walk follows Shannon Brook as it rambles through the woods and leads to viewpoints of seven spectacular waterfalls\, with much of the trail following the route that led Ossipee Mountain Park visitors to these points more than a century ago. Signs along the trail provide descriptions of the waterfalls and include old images\, providing an idea of how these falls appeared to visitors many years ago. \n  \nThis is a moderate hike of about 1 mile and has an elevation climb of approximately 200’. It also includes several sections of rock stairs.  \nPlease wear appropriate footwear\, dress for the weather\, and bring sunscreen and bug spray as desired.

DESCRIPTION:Disobey your mother and look at the sun…through a hydrogen-alpha telescope! Each Monday\, members of the NH Astronomical Society will set up their telescopes in the field by Shannon Pond. Feel free to drop by and speak with the astronomers\, learn about the sun\, and try out their telescopes anytime between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm. \nSolar Gazing requires clear skies. In the event that weather conditions are not right\, there will be a drop-by astronomy presentation in the Winnipesaukee Room on the second floor of the Carriage House instead. \nThis is a free program and registration is encouraged but not required.
