Things To Do
Whether you’re looking for a day’s worth of fun activities or leisurely tour through Lucknow, you’ll find it here at Castle in the Clouds. Check out our Program Calendar to see what’s happening during your visit.
Lucknow: the Museum
Start your journey to Lucknow as you travel via trolley on the same road that Thomas & Olive Plant traveled back in the early 1900s. Upon arrival to the mansion, a guide will provide you with a 10-15 minute orientation. Learn about the rags to riches to rags story of Thomas Plant as well as the history of the Arts & Craft style building.
After the orientation visitors are welcome to tour the mansion at their leisure on a self-guided tour. Floor plans are provided to help guide visitors through the building and point out important features such as central vacuuming systems and needle showers. Special “I-Spy Cards” are available to children as an educational and exciting scavenger hunt; if all the items are located, children can pick a prize from a treasure chest! See everything vintage from the clothes in Olive Plant’s closets to the innovative electrical fixtures. Step out the back door to the lawn and stroll through the gardens.
The Carriage House Restaurant
The Carriage House Restaurant has received rave reviews from critics and guests alike. Open daily in season from 11:30-3:30 enjoy a variety of delicious lunch items, from sandwiches to full entrees. Check out a sample menu! Outdoor seating on our terrace offers views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding mountains. The interior of the building has remained relatively untouched and guests can dine indoors, in what were once the original horse stalls.
During our busy season (early August as well as Fall Foliage season) we can have a wait-list of up to an hour or more in the restaurant. We do not take reservations, so we highly suggest arriving early if you’d like to join us for lunch, especially if you have a large party. If you are coming for LUNCH ONLY and do not want to see the mansion, you can visit via Ossipee Park Road free of charge. Friends of the Castle can visit with their entire car for LUNCH ONLY through the Front Gate, and access the Scenic Road free of charge.
The Art Gallery
Located in The Carriage House, our Art Gallery hosts various exhibits throughout the season. Each exhibit theme provides guests with intellectual and beautiful works of art. Throughout the season, guests are given the opportunity to browse local artists, private collections, and university students’ work, to explore paintings, photographs and sculptures! Each exhibit brings it’s own beauty and is reason to come back again and again. There will be a Gallery Reception for each exhibit when it is first installed; each is free to the public. Visit our Program Calendar for more information regarding exhibits and receptions.
No stop to Castle in the Clouds is complete without a visit to our Gift Shop. Visiting with Young Children
Castle in the Clouds is a fun place to spend the day with your entire family. Much of the property is open for our guests to discover at their leisure so feel free to take as much or as little time as you’d like exploring. If you’re visiting with small children, please keep in mind that strollers and metal framed baby carriers will not be permitted inside the mansion.
Some highlights for younger children include the Scavenger Hunt at Lucknow – if children find everything on the list they can pick a prize from the treasure chest! This Hunt is fun and educational for children of all ages, showing them some of the neat features and technological advances inside Lucknow at the time.
Shannon Pond is another big hit with families. Located on our exit road, it hosts NH largest Rainbow Trout. Children of ALL ages love to see the fish jump right out of the water to catch the food. We have fish feeders (that take quarters only) located on the dock at the pond. Please do not bring your own food to feed the trout as foreign foods can be harmful to their digestive systems.
Bring a picnic and spend the day with us! We have several picnic tables located throughout the property. Some tables are located in the grove across from the Gift Shop, but car traffic can be heavy in this area. There are several tables located in the Meadows by Shannon Pond, at Cones in the Clouds, and across the road from Shannon Pond. Some of the tables are covered, and other shaded by trees. These locations are the best for families with young children as they are free to run around the meadows in a relatively safe area.
